Prairie Storm Athletics is a Track and Field team based in Neepawa, MB. The team has regular practices throughout the year while athletes compete in cross country along with the indoor and outdoor track and field competition seasons.
The team is open to athletes from grade 7 through high school, as well as to athletes in University. Athletes are selected for the team based through an athlete application process and please note that not every athlete that applies for the team will be selected for the team due to limited space. The application process is ongoing and athletes are encouraged to apply at any time for any season. The selection process will be prior to each of the three seasons that the year is broken into; Season 1 – Cross Country (mid to late August into October), Season 2 – Indoor Competition (October to mid-March), and Season 3 – Outdoor Competition (mid-March to July). Athletes can apply for one, two or all three seasons and all athletes are expected to compete regularly. There can be waitlists for seasons so submitting an application early is very important and encouraged.
The athlete application process is necessary as the team prides itself on being small enough so that each athlete gets constant coaching and feedback. Too many athletes training at one time takes away from athletes getting the feedback they need to make improvements.
Cross Country and Outdoor Competition groups tend to be a little larger in numbers while the Indoor Competition Team is smaller because indoor training spaces do not allow for many athletes, thus not every athlete that applies to be a member of the team will be selected or able to do so.
The purpose of the team is to assist, allow, and to encourage track and field athletes to pursue track and field outside of the school system and to expose athletes to seasonal and year-long programming and development. This year-round exposure will help athletes to improve their individual abilities and personal bests, as well as aid in the preparation for identification and selection of Provincial Teams for those athletes who seek those opportunities. The team is developmental with a focus on building a solid foundation so that athletes can successfully transition into high-performance sport.
The team places a strong emphasis on developing proper running mechanics and movement patterns, and a focus on developing general athletic abilities. Ultimately, a major component of track and field across many events is speed and power which is a focus for all athletes.
