January 21st, 2018 will be a day that Lara Denbow and the rest of Prairie Storm Athletics athletes and parents will certainly remember. Denbow, the Grade 9 student from Neepawa, tied the Provincial Midget Women’s High Jump Record of 1.70m that was set in 1986. Denbow will have her name added to the record book and regardless if that record falls it will certainly be a day to remember. Heading into the competition in Winnipeg, Denbow had previously set a personal best of 1.58m, so not only did set a record, she bested her previous best jump by a full 12 cm. Her jump was good for gold and is currently the leading jump in all of Canada for Women under 16. Not only did she set the record she followed that up with an indoor personal best run in the 800m which was again good for first.
Denbow was not the only athlete to set personal bests over the weekend. Tyson Chambers and Wil Miller-Harms set personal bests in both the 60m and 200m. Miller-Harms bested his teammate by 0.01 in both races to place 2nd in both races with Chambers finishing 3rd both times. Taine Middleton placed 2nd in the 60m Youth Men’s race and 4th in the 200m race, both just off personal best times. Peighton Johnson picked up a personal best in the 200m to 1st in the Youth Women’s event, this after finishing 2nd in the Youth Women’s 400m. Jorja Hoad ran a personal best 8.21 seconds in the Midget Women’s 60m to pick up a first-place finish and followed that with a 4th place finish in the 200m.
Daxx Turner was able to add an impressive 33cm to his previous personal best performance in the triple jump to finish 1st, with a new mark of 12.78m. He jumped his way to silver in the high jump as well.
Caitlin Meyers had a third-place performance in the 400m and a 2nd place finish in the 800m as well.
In Edmonton, at the Golden Bear Open, Ben Perrett finished 18th overall in the Open category out of 31 athletes. Racing up against the University men was a first time experience for him. He was the fastest Youth 300m in the event. He followed that with a personal best performance in the 600m to finish 4th.
Teammate, Daniele Dyck ran seasons best times in both the 60m and 200m where she finished 2nd in both races.
