The Storm Blow Through May and into June

It’s been a busy past few weeks for Prairie Storm Athletics as athletes have blown into competition both with the team and with their respective school teams.  Athletes have already had competitions in Stonewall, Neepawa, Winkler, Selkirk and many school day events for the athletes not competing with high school teams.

All athletes have finalized Zone Championships with every member of Prairie Storm Athletics qualifying for MHSAA Provincial High School Track and Field Championships in multiple events! To qualify for the Provincial Championship athletes must place 1-3rd in their events, so needless to say the athletes have been successful so far this season.  It’ll be an exciting 3 days on the track at the University of Manitoba on June 8th, 9th and 10th to watch the team members compete and for some, compete against each other!  A major highlight from the Zone Championships includes Neepawa’s Ben Perrett breaking the Zone 7 400m and 800m records for the junior varsity boys category.

These weren’t the only records to fall recently.  Kensi Rainkie broke not one, not two but three Neepawa Area Collegiate records last week at her school track meet!  She set new school records in the Grade 7 girls 100m, 200m, and 400m, while her Prairie Storm Athletics teammate Lara Denbow set new Grade 8 girls records in the 400m and triple jump.  Congratulations Ben, Kensi and Lara!

The heat finally arrived this week and storms hit across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta on Friday, with thundershowers, hail and even a tornado.   The “stormy” weather continued on Saturday at the SATT Open at the University of Manitoba where the strong performances continued on the track and in the field.  The team set 14 new personal bests on Saturday, led by Morgan Ramsay who had two personal best performances in the 100m, 12.73 (2nd), and the 200m, 26.10 (1st).  Complete weekend results will be posted once they are available online.

Prairie Storm athletes competed in 23 individual events and athletes brought home an impressive 19 podium finishes!  The team also had relay teams entered in the Midget Girls 4x100m relay and the Junior Girls 4x100m relay; both teams placed 1st overall!
