Cold temperatures didn’t stop Prairie Storm Athletics athletes from heating up this weekend at the University of Manitoba’s Max Bell Centre to kick off the 2016 season as club took part in the Athletics Manitoba Winter Open.
Kensi Rainkie competed in her first ever indoor track meet taking on the 60m and she didn’t disappoint, shaking off some nervousness to place 3rd in the girls 12-13 age group, with a 9.49 sec, just a head of teammate Brooklyn Perrett’s 9.59. Charlot Butler picked up 3rd in the Women’s 16-17 60m with a new personal best time of 8.44. The 3rd place finishes by the ladies continued as Jensyn Baron posted a 8.81 in the Women’s 18-19 60m race, just behind Prairie Storm graduate and current U of M Bison Amy Todoruk, who took 1st.
It was in the 300m that things changed for the club as Brooklyn Perrett placed 2nd in the Girls 12-13 300m with a 50.52. Charlot Butler ended up 6th in the Women’s 16-17 300m as four athletes battled in a pack finish for 3rd, while teammate Bea Levin finished 10th. Jensyn Baron finished 4th in her Women’s 18-19 300m.
On the Men’s side Ben Perrett started his weekend off well with a 2nd place finish in the Men’s 14-15 300m with a 40.64, while Iwan Levin placed 4th in the Men’s 16-17 300m, 38.11.
As athletes woke to temperatures below -35 Saturday morning with the windchill the strong efforts continued indoors as the day started with the 60m Hurdles. Bea Levin grabbed herself a 2nd place in the Women’s Youth Hurdles with a time of 10.99, while teammate Kiera Senkbeil placed 1st in the Junior Women’s category. Not to be outdone by his younger sister, Iwan Levin placed 1st in the Youth Men’s 60m hurdles with a 9.73.
In the field it was a day to remember for Lara Denbow as she finished 1st in the Bantam Girls High Jump with an impressive new personal best jump of 1.40m. Teammate Bea Levin wasn’t to be outdone by her younger teammate by breaking the 1.40m barrier for the first time setting a new personal best of 1.45m, good for 2nd place in the Youth category. Charlot Butler placed 2nd in the Youth Women’s Long Jump with a 4.46m mark, while teammate Kiera Senkbeil took home a 1st place finish.
Back on the track, Lara Denbow finished 3rd in the Bantam Girls 600m with a time of 1:54:23 ahead of teammate Brooklyn Perrett’s 2:06:98. On the men’s side, Ben Perrett’s successful weekend continued as he placed 2nd overall in the Midget Men’s 600m with a new personal best time of 1:32:77.
